Melanotan 2 is a synthetic analogue of peptide hormone alpha MSH and stimulates melanogenesis and increases sexual arousal. It was under development as a drug candidate for femaleĀ  but somehow clinical development ceased for Melanotan 2 in 2003 and as of 2018, all ceased to market containing it. Research in the early 1960s showed that in animals like rats, administration of alpha MSH caused muscle gain, and work on this continued in many labs up through the 1980s, when scientists at the University in the USA began attempting to develop Alpha MSH and analogues as potential Sunless tanning agents and synthesized and tested several analogues, including Melanotan 1 and Melanotan II.
